CHINA-US: TWO GLOBAL TIMES ARTICLES ASSERT CHINA'S STRONG POSITION AND CALL ON U.S. TO EASE TENSIONS

Two articles in China's state-owned Global Times (February 6) sought to project China's advantageous position vis-a-vis the US. One article stated, "China's down-to-earth diplomatic approach is gradually showing its effectiveness. The US strategy of comprehensively suppressing China, which started from the previous US administration, has crumbled". It added "The US' actual performance is poor and the country is only high-profile in preaching an ideology, while China has fulfilled responsibilities of great power on many issues. US deception cannot last long and facts eventually speak louder than words". It claimed too that "China has been falsely accused by the US of violating human rights, eroding world democracy and engaging in bullying and coercion" and that "China does not interfere in other countries' internal affairs". Stating that while "Over the past few years, Washington's messages toward Beijing have been confrontational, while China has been relatively restrained and has repeatedly expressed its willingness to cooperate with the US and manage differences", it said "China's development has not been crushed by the US. The construction of national power continues to accelerate, which will be a long-term positive shaping power for an international public opinion concerning China". It added "China is not aggressive in international competition, but is generally defensive. This is a fundamental reason for the outside world to form a good impression of China".
The second article (February 6) was by Hu Xijin, Editor-in-Chief of Global Times. Commenting on the recent telephone call between Chinese Politburo member and Director of the CCP CC's Foreign Affairs Commission Yang Jiechi and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on February 6, Hu Xijin said while "China's summary of the conversation displayed the common ground between both sides; that is, both countries value China-US relations and are willing to develop stable and constructive bilateral relations" and "China conveyed its firm position on the Taiwan question and made clear that issues about Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet are China's domestic affairs", "the summary released by the US only made obvious the US' unilateral attitude and highlighted differences". Seeking to create a difference between "Blinken, as a senior diplomat, has expressed his due respect to China and reiterated the Biden administration's basic attitude of adhering to the one-China policy", the "US Department of State's short release about the phone call, apart from kindly extending his "best wishes" for the upcoming Lunar New Year, everything else presented his tough approach on China". He said this "showed the US' ideological willfulness and hypocrisy when dealing with China". He cautioned that "If the Biden administration really wants to handle the US' domestic affairs well first, maybe their only option is to reduce the current tension between China and the US and ease the two countries' conflicts. Otherwise, the Biden administration might find itself falling into the holes dug by Donald Trump and Mike Pompeo during their final "frenzy." He concluded by expressing the hope that "No matter what they say to the American people, we hope their actual actions can bring the US' China policy from the cloud of fantasy back down to the pragmatic ground".
The state-owned CCTV (February 6) also reported the conversation. It said "Yang Jiechi emphasized that China and the United States should respect each other’s core interests and their respective political systems and development paths, and handle their own affairs well. China will unswervingly follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. No one can stop it. Yang Jiechi said that the Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive core issue in Sino-US relations, and it concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US should strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqués. Hong Kong-related, Xinjiang-related, and Tibet-related matters are China's internal affairs, and no external forces are allowed to interfere".

(Comment: There is a stark difference in the reporting of the conversation between Blinken and Yang Jiechi by China and the US State Department.)
