CHINA-US: CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER CALLS FOR DIALOGUE WITH U.S. TO "BUILD UP GOODWILL" AND REPAIR THEIR DAMAGED RELATIONSHIP

Speaking on February 22, 2021, at the opening ceremony of the Lanting Forum on "Dialogue and Cooperation, Controlling Differences-Promoting Sino-US Relations Back on Track", State Councilor Wang Yi said China and the United States should work together to reopen dialogue and “build up goodwill” to repair their damaged relationship. He said China stands ready to “resume candid communication with the U.S. and engage in dialogues aimed at solving problems” and added that the severing of all levels of dialogue between the two countries over the past few years is one of the main reasons behind the deteriorating relationship. Caixin (February 22) observed that Wang Yi’s remark represents China’s highest-profile comment on ties since U.S. President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping spoke by phone before the Lunar New Year holiday earlier this month.
