CHINA-NPC: CPPCC MEMBER EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT AFFEMINITY OF CHINESE YOUTH

Zhang Shuhua, a member of the CPPCC and Director of the Institute of Political Science at CASS, proposed (March 10) promoting "male masculinity" in literature, education and television. Tracing this "social harm" to the 'veneration of effeminate idols in the media and entertainment industry that began in Japan in 2000, then spread to Korea and then to China', he claimed it 'turns boys into "sissies" (小鲜肉), lowering their physical and mental health, undermining cultural traditions, hindering the training of new socialists, and lowering the willingness of boys to join the military and participate in society.' He made five suggestions to enhance the masculinity of boys, such as more national defence education, broadcasting martial arts and revolutionary traditions on CCTV, and making more masculine film and entertainment productions.
