CHINA-HONGKONG: HONGKONG HOLDS ITS FIRST NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION DAY ON APRIL 15

Hong Kong held its first National Security Education Day.  Hong Kong Education Secretary Kevin Yeung said schools across the Special Administrative Region (SAR) will hold activities on April 15, including raising the Chinese flag and singing the Chinese national anthem to foster a better understanding of national security. Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, Zheng Yanxiong, head of the secretive agency China created to implement the controversial security law that was condemned by major western governments, and Major General Chen Daoxiang, head of the People’s Liberation Army garrison in Hong Kong SAR,  attended the launch ceremony at the Hong Kong convention centre.
Speaking at a ceremony in Wan Chai to mark “National Security Education Day” Luo Huining, Director of Beijing’s Liaison Office, said Beijing’s bottom line when it comes to safeguarding national security is to prevent others from using Hong Kong as a "pawn". He said “Any behaviour that may affect national security, or the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong...when it is time, actions must be taken. In relation to any external or foreign forces that may interfere with Hong Kong affairs or attempt to use Hong Kong as a pawn, we will propose strong objections and teach them a lesson.” At the same function, Zheng Yanxiong praised Chief Executive Carrie Lam and said “Under the leadership of the chief executive, the committee and other departments, especially the disciplined services, have shown that they have been just and fair in law enforcement in combating crime, and serving the society to promote this great transformation from chaos back to governance.” He said, “You are the safeguarding gods for national security in Hong Kong”. Zhen Yanxiong also praised judges, prosecutors, lawyers and legal scholars for their "correct and very serious attitude towards safeguarding national security", adding that Beijing's plans to "perfect the electoral system" in Hong Kong will maintain a sense of security and happiness for the general public. Other speakers at the event in Wan Chai included the acting commissioner of the Foreign Ministry’s office in Hong Kong, Yan Yirui, and Major General Chen Daoxiang from the Hong Kong garrison of the People’s Liberation Army.
