CHINA-US: SOURCE CLOSE TO CHINESE VICE PREMIER LIU HE POSTS ACCOUNT OF LIU HE'S TALK WITH USTR KATHERINE TAI ON MAY 27

A source close to Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and his team posted a brief comment (Taoran Notes, May 27 & 28) on a WeChat account of the talks between USTR Katherine Tai and Liu He on May 27. It claimed that US and Chinese officials are on the same page about resuming stable trade relations and said “The two sides have a high degree of consensus on the issue that economic and trade is still the ballast of Sino-US relations.” It also said "In terms of continuing in-depth communication, China and the United States are in the same direction" and “There should be more communication between China and the United States in the fields of economy and trade, such as new calls, or other forms of communication.” It observed that "even when the US is aggressively discrediting and suppressing China, instigating public opinion, leading to accelerated deterioration and fission of Sino-US relations, and falling to historical lows, economic and trade cooperation is still a relatively stable area between China and the United State and added that "It is very important to normalize Sino-US relations and ensure that Sino-US relations do not derail or cross the red line". Stating that the economic and trade structures of the two sides are highly complementary and there is great potential for cooperation, it noted the use of words such as "frank, pragmatic, and constructive exchanges" and "exchange of opinions" in the draft as "quite meaningful". It did acknowledge, though, that "There is even a force in the United States that is vigorously promoting the "decoupling" of China and the United States". In conclusion, it said the "call on the 27th is currently one of the few positive communication between China and the United States, and it is also a communication that is truly beneficial to China, the United States, and the whole world".
