CHINA-LEADERSHIP: PEOPLE'S DAILY PUBLISHES ARTICLE BY GANSU PARTY SECRETARY

The People's Daily (June 3) published an article by Yin Hong, Party Secretary of Gansu Province captioned: 'Keep in mind the entrustment to write a new chapter and forge ahead on a new journey'. Stressing that "Gansu is one of the first provinces in the northwest to establish a party organization, and it has played an irreplaceable role in the process of the Chinese revolution. It said "Last year, the province's GDP reached 901.67 billion yuan, an increase of 670 times compared with the beginning of New China" and that it has "become an important energy and raw material base in western China". It claimed "The problem of absolute poverty is solved as a whole. The people of Gansu have been fighting unremittingly against poverty in history. After the hard work of reform and opening up, especially since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, all 75 impoverished counties have taken off their hats, and 7262 impoverished villages have all withdrawn."
