On May 31, Chinese President Xi Jinping chaired a Politburo meeting to listen to reports on major policy measures to actively respond to the ageing population in the “14th Five-Year Plan” period and to deliberate on the “Decision about Improving Birth Policies to Promote Long-Term Balanced Population Development”. The meeting pointed out that “actively responding” to the ageing population is “an important measure to achieve high-quality economic development and safeguard national security and social stability.”  It also emphasized the necessity of implementing a “national strategy,” “accelerat[ing] the establishment and improvement of related policy systems and institutional frameworks,” gradually extending the legal retirement age, and improving or constructing old-age-related policies and frameworks such as insurance, social security, and elderly care.
