CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINESE PRESIDENT X JINPING POINTS TO QINGHAI PROVINCE AS 'MODEL OF NATIONAL UNITY'

During a three-day (June 7-9) tour of Qinghai province, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of Qinghai by stressing its importance for maintaining order in neighbouring Xinjiang and Tibet. Xinhua (June 8) reported him as saying in Xining, that Qinghai, where around a quarter of the population are ethnic Tibetans, was a “model of national unity”. Xi Jinping also told local officials to adhere to Beijing’s ethnic policies and continue the sinicization of religion. On June 8, Xi Jinping visited Gangcha County in Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture when he was briefed about the environmental protection efforts in the Qilian Mountains and Qinghai Lake. At the lake, he inspected achievements made in comprehensively addressing environmental problems and protecting biodiversity. Xinhua said he also visited a village of Shaliuhe Township to learn about the lives of local Tibetan residents. CGTN said during the tour Xi Jinping Xi stressed the need to always put the people first and advance reform and opening-up to promote ecological conservation and high-quality development on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
