CHINA-NORTH KOREA: XI JINPING AND KIM JONG-UN EXCHANGE CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES ON 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF TREATY OF FRIENDSHIP AND COOPERATION

China's state-owned CCTV News on July 11, reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Chairman of the State Council, and Supreme Commander of the North Korean Armed Forces on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the China-North Korea Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. Replying to questions by the media earlier on July 7, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the treaty remains effective until the two sides reach an agreement and "is a strategic decision made by the older generations of leaders of the two countries with foresight and a major event in the history of bilateral relations. The treaty aims to strengthen China". He added it has "made important contributions to maintaining regional and even world peace and stability." Wang Wenbin also said that in the new era and new situation, China is willing to work with the DPRK to inherit the tradition and face the future. He stated that China will promote the continuous development of the traditional friendly and cooperative relations between China and North Korea, better benefit the two peoples, and make new contributions to the promotion of peace, stability, development and prosperity in the international region.
