CHINA-AFGHANISTAN: WELCOMING CHINESE INVESTMENT TALIBAN SPOKESMAN SAYS TALIBAN WILL NO LONGER ALLOW UYGHUR SEPARATISTS TO ENTER CHINA FROM AFGHANISTAN

The South China Morning Post (July 9) reported that Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said on July 7 that the Taliban welcomes Chinese investment in Afghanistan’s reconstruction and promises to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel. Shahin said the Taliban regard China as a "friend" of Afghanistan and hope to negotiate with Beijing "as soon as possible" on investment in Afghanistan's reconstruction work. In an exclusive interview with 'This Week in Asia' under the South China Morning Post, Shaheen said that the Taliban currently controls 85% of Afghanistan’s territory. Shahin said: "We welcome them (Chinese investors). If they have investments, we will of course ensure their safety. Their safety is very important to us." Speaking of the reconstruction of Afghanistan, Shaheen said that after the withdrawal of US troops, it is “necessary to hold talks” with China, the largest investor in Afghanistan. He said: "We have been to China many times and we have a very good relationship with them. China is a friendly country and we welcome (China) to participate in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan." Shaheen also stated that the Taliban will no longer allow Uyghur separatists in China to enter Afghanistan. Some separatists had previously sought asylum in Afghanistan. The Taliban will also prevent al-Qaeda or any other terrorist organization from operating in Afghanistan. Shaheen also said "People from other countries want to use Afghanistan as a place to launch attacks on other countries. We have made a promise that we will not allow them to enter (Afghanistan), regardless of whether they are directed at individuals or entities in any country, including China." Asked whether this commitment includes the East Iraqi Movement Organization, he said: "Yes, it (East Iraqi Movement) will not be allowed to enter (Afghanistan)."
