CHINA-MINORITIES: CHINA'S STATE COUNCIL INFORMATION OFFICE RELEASED A WHITE PAPER ON XINJIANG ON JULY 14

Xinhua (July 14) reported the release by China's State Council Information Office of a Paper on 'Respecting and Protecting the Rights of All Ethnic Groups in Xinjiang'. Comprising a Preface, Conclusion and seven Chapters, it claimed "In 60 BC, the Western Han Dynasty set up the Western Regions Frontier Command, and Xinjiang was formally incorporated into the territory of China, becoming an integral part of this unified multiethnic country". The seven chapters are Civil Rights; Political Rights; Economic Rights; Cultural Rights; Social Rights; Rights of Women and Children; and Freedom of Religious Belief. It asserted, in conclusion, that "Xinjiang is now a stable and orderly society" and that "Under the firm leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Xi Jinping at the core, Xinjiang has achieved moderate prosperity in all respects together with the rest of the country".
