CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINESE PRESIDENT ON 2-DAY (JULY 21-22) VISIT TO NYINGCHI AND LHASA IN TIBET

Xinhua (July 22) disclosed that Chinese President Xi Jinping had arrived (July 21) at Nyingchi's Mainling Airport where he was "warmly welcomed by local people and officials of various ethnic groups". He later visited the Nyang River Bridge, to inspect the ecological preservation in the basin of the Yarlung Zangbo River and its tributary Nyang River. The same afternoon, Xi Jinping visited a local city planning hall, a village and a park in Nyingchi, inspecting the locality's city development planning, rural vitalization and city park building efforts. The following day (July 22) Xi Jinping went to Nyingchi railway station and was briefed about the overall designing of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway and the operation of Lhasa-Nyingchi railway section. He then travelled by train to the TAR capital Lhasa. He inspected the construction along the railway during the ride.

(Comment: The last time Xi Jinping visited TAR, then as Vice President,  was in 2011 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of China's occupation of Tibet. At that time also he went to Nyingchi. The significance of the visits to Nyingchi is that its administrative boundary includes the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.)
