CHINA-MILITARY: NEW STRATEGIC WEAPONS AGAINST US, JAPAN AND INDIA

Japan's Kyodo News on August 2, 2015, reported that China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Command College had published a report in November 2014 which said that China needs to develop new strategic weapons against the United States, Japan, India and Vietnam in the Asia-Pacific region. The report said it is crucial for China to build up an air force capable of winning control of the airspace over Japan and the Western Pacific, one able to carry out reconnaissance operations and precision strikes. For this, China needs advanced weapons including new long-range stealth bombers and an anti-ballistic missile system similar to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense of the United States. The report indicated that the PLAAAF is thinking about how to project its power into the Western Pacific as the PLA Navy increases its activities in the open sea. It directly identified the United States as a potential challenger, along with Japan, India and Vietnam.

Among other weapons that China needs in the future and listed in the report are air-launched supersonic cruise missiles, large cargo planes, airships, next-generation fighters, drones and precision attack munitions. The PLAAF is also considering establishing China's first space force.
