CHINA-EXTERNAL: CHINA TO MEND FENCES WITH NEIGHBOURS

The Tokyo-based 'Nihon Keizai Shimbun' assessed recently that China will try to mend 'broken relations' with its neighbors in the months prior to the APEC summit in Beijing in November. It said China has been "testing" how serious the United States is in its so-called "return to Asia" strategy, pointing to a series of moves the international community has viewed as aggressive attempts by China to strengthen it's territorial claims. It pointed to the new Chinese map released by Beijing in July purporting to show the totality of Beijing's territorial claims by encapsulating most of the South China Sea on one complete map. In previous editions of the map, China's claims in the region were placed in a small box at the corner.
