CHINA-US: SURVEILLANCE OF CHINA'S COASTLINE BY US

People’s Liberation Army Navy(PLAN) Commander, Admiral Wu Shengli, said at the 21st International Seapower Symposium in Newport, USA, that China would keep intercepting U.S. military surveillance planes that come close to its coast, but wanted to avoid a repeat of a collision that downed two jets 13 years ago, killing a Chinese pilot. China's state-owned Global Times quoted him on September 17, 2014, as saying: “It’s become routine for the U.S. to conduct close-in surveillance of China and I don’t see the end of these activities; the U.S. won’t be the U.S. if they stop doing it. But China’s counter-measures won’t end either.” Global Times added that Admiral Wu Shengli had asked the U.S. side to produce evidence to prove the accuracy of its claims, "just two photos can’t prove anything.”

In Rhode Island, Wu Shengli also declined to formally meet his Japanese counterpart on the sidelines of the forum, saying it wouldn’t be appropriate for them to meet before a formal meeting between President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
