The Palawan regional court of the Philippines on August 5, 2014, sentenced 12 Chinese fishermen who strayed into the Tubbataha protected area in southwestern Philippines -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site in April last year. They were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 6 to 12 years. The captain of the vessel, Liu Wenjie, was also sentenced. The court also imposed a penalty of US$100,000 for each of the accused.
