CHINA-AUSTRALIA: CHIEF OF XINHUA CANBERRA BUREAU SPARKS ROW WHEN SHE BLOCKS PUBLIC BROADCASTER FROM FILMING HER

Tensions flared in the Australian Prime Minister's courtyard on June 26, when Bai Xu, Chief of Xinhua's Canberra bureau, became angry that a SBS [public broadcaster] cameraman was filming her. The Daily Telegraph reported (June 27) that the Australian cameraman turned the lens on the Chinese reporter after witnesses claimed a photographer with Ms Bai Xu was taking photos of other journalists. As the incident attracted the notice of other Australian journalists and the federal police, the two Chinese reporters left the room. She was followed by the Prime Minister's security team, who later said she did hold a permanent media pass but the photographer did not. The photographer is understood to have refused to answer when asked where they worked.
