CHINA-HONG KONG
A Reuters report of September 11, 2014, said that a meeting was hosted in Hong Kong by the head of China's Liaison Office in Hong Kong, Zhang Xiaoming on August 19, 2014. At the meeting pro-democracy lawmaker Leung Yiu-chung asked whether Beijing would allow any democrat to run for the city’s highest office. According to the Reuters report, 51-year old Zhang Xiaoming delivered a blunt response saying: “The fact that you are allowed to stay alive, already shows the country's inclusiveness." (Comment: It is unlikely that a senior Chinese official holding such a sensitive appointment would have used such language. He is more likely to have used the word "exist" (存在 ) in the context of "political force" etc.)
