CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CDIC ANNOUNCES FOUR "TIGERS" EXPELLED FROM PARTY AND REMANDED FOR CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION

On January 4, the Central Discipline Inspection Commission/National Supervisory Commission official website announced that Deng Huilin, Deputy Mayor of Chongqing, had been expelled from the party, sacked, and remanded to the Procuratorate for a criminal investigation. Deng Huilin was transferred to Chongqing as part of the push against Sun Zhengcai in 2017.  He was placed under investigation in June 2020. Other "tigers" similarly punished are Wen Guodong (文国栋), Vice Governor Qinghai Province; Hu Wenming (胡问鸣), Chair and Party Secretary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC); and Luo Jiamang (骆家駹), Chief Accountant for the state-owned China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFOC). Caixin suggests that these punishments are routine prior to the annual meeting of the National Supervisory Commission. It has identified an additional 22 senior cadres as being under "investigation".

(Comment: Hu Wenming's case is interesting because there have been reports that it may have connections to the PLAN aircraft carrier program. Wen Guodong has been linked to a major mining scandal in Qinghai.)
