CHINA-SOUTH KOREA: CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING HAS 40-MINUTE TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT MOON JAE-IN

Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreed during a late night 40-minute discussion on January 26 to “promote high-level exchanges” between the two countries and to reschedule a visit by Xi Jinping to Seoul that was postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and also work out a “blueprint for the development of bilateral ties over next three decades”. The two leaders reportedly vowed to boost people-to-people and economic exchanges, cooperate in the fight against Covid-19 and work towards resolving the stand-off over North Korea’s nuclear programme. Moon asked China to take a “constructive role” on North Korea, while Xi Jinping expressed support for both, an inter-Korean dialogue and talks between the United States and Pyongyang. He said, “China attaches importance to South Korea’s roles in resolving [the North Korea issue] politically.”
